On our first full day in Siena, we had a long overdue sleep-in and wandered the giant streets of the old town. We also visited the Duomo which was actually quite unique in its design to the ones I've already seen. That night we ate dinner at the hotel restaurant for the second night in a row (the night before with our Kansas friends Allison and Justin). The meal was excellent and we ended up being presented with a free bottle of Tuscan wine when our carafe of wine with our meal had some strange residue in it when we were done. The waiter felt bad and gave us the bottle with the picture of a beetle on it. Those wacky Tuscans. I suddenly had flashbacks to Montenegro. At breakfast the next morning we decided to join some friends we had made at breakfast the day before for both the meal and a day trip in their rental car to Pisa. We had a great time driving through the tiny Tuscan villages and over the rolling Tuscan hills. The Leaning Tower was still....crooked and the Italian Autostrades were crazier than anything I'd ever seen before but not really as horrible as people had made them out to be. The next day we planned to meet up with our Pisa friends Yvanne and Nicky, but when we boarded the wrong bus outside our hotel (the reception guy said they all go to the center of town - I guess he forgot to specify which town) we ended up in a Siena suburb named Monteroni....again I had flashbacks to Montenegro. So we spent the afternoon downtown (when we finally made it back from the burbs) and headed back to the hotel with some grub from the nearby Co-op supermarket. We rendez-vous-ed with our Pisa friends that night and planned to head to Florence with them the next morning. When we arrived in Florence the next day, we popped in to the airport to quickly check rental car prices out of curiosity. It had been too expensive at other airports but we got a really good deal on a car for four days and with automatic transmission to boot (that's a rarety in Europe). So we gave our friends a ride to Bologna in return for their previous generosity. They headed off to Venice by train and we spent the night in a beautiful room in Bologna.
