On New Year's Day we woke early and headed back to Vatican City to see the Pope and his museum. We did get seats to see the frail old Catholic man that so many come to see every week. Peter's Basilica was gorgeous inside and out. When we arrived at the Vatican Museum, we realized it was unfortunately closed for the day. We thus headed home, grabbed our bags and moved on to Siena, a lovely little Tuscan town a four hour train ride away. We met a nice couple from Kansas City at an intermediate train station where we were stuck for a couple hours when our Rome train was shockingly late to leave. When we couldn't find much budget accomodation available, they recommended the Best Western where they were staying. We got a really good rate and a wicked room. After months of traveling, I had finally reached the promised land. Fresh towels and sheets, a mini-bar, TV, clean bathroom, climate control, and perpetual hot water. Always! 24/7. My first shower lasted almost as long as a regular season Italian soccer match.
