    Cafe Pizzeria Hollywood, Bar, Montenegro
    12/26/02 16:18 GMT+1

After four lazy days with Igor in Dubrovnik, it was time to move on. I was completely refreshed after months of travel and ready to tackle anything. Georgina and I couldn't decide between spending Christmas in Montenegro or in Bosnia (in that lovely coastal town we passed along the bus ride). The boat from Dubrovnik to Italy wasn't running on Christmas Eve so we needed to find a more effective port. We couldn't figure out for sure if we were allowed to enter Montenegro (the former Yugoslavia) without Visas, so on the morning of our journey, we just made a choice and decided to head to the border and give it a shot.
When our bus arrived at customs, we dropped off, grabbed our packs, mailed some postcards, and walked the 800 meters or so along a cliff to the Montenegro border. When we handed over our passports, we verified three or four times with the border guy that we would be allowed to leave as well. He assured us that there would be "no problems". Just don't go to Serbia. Oky-doky. We boarded a bus to Bar on the other side.
Three hours later we arrived in the cute coastal town of Bar. Not quite as adorable as the last two but cute nonetheless. We trekked down to the harbour and inquired about boats to Italy. Not on Christmas Eve, only on Christmas night, they said. So we had a local recommend the Hotel Topolica for affordable lodging for the night.
When we checked in, we were shocked at the low price for the room we were getting. I just assumed it was cuz no one in their right mind goes to Montenegro. We went out in search of dinner. Some lovely folks at a pizzeria recommended a seafood restaurant by the Marina. It was another dirt-cheap feast in a 5-star restaurant. They even had all the fancy cutlery for every possible course. I had filet mignon and Georgie had the calamari. Brilliant meal!
On the way home we picked up some snacks and food in case everything would be closed on Christmas day. After settling in to our room, I noticed something curious, a bug crawling along the dresser. I thought nothing of it, squashed it and went on with my life. Later, there appeared another where I had killed the first and one more in the bathroom. What the heck? After Georgina had fallen asleep I found a vast array of them congregating behind the headboard of the bed and behind the mirror in the bathroom. I battled them tooth and nail until the wee small hours of the morning.
The next day I attempted to reason with the manager. He hardly seemed shocked and did very little to help us. We got the heck out of there and went to buy tickets for the ferry. Alas, the sailing had been cancelled due to "Bad Weather" which is actually Yugoslavian for "Christmas".
