In Venice, we stayed at a hostel/hotel near the train station, much more convenient in most every way to the place Chris and I stayed a month earlier. On our first night we napped mostly (having been awake all night) and then had some dinner at a cute little restaurant down the street from our hotel. I also introduced Georgina to the wonders of gelati.
The next day, we toured the major squares and markets as well as the nearby Jewish district (that I had somehow missed last time through). On our stroll through San Marco square, we stumbled upon a movie set in the process of filming "The Italian Job". I expected some no-name Italian actors to be hanging around but after closer inspection, we identified Donald Sutherland and Mark Wahlberg (a.k.a. Marky Mark -- without his Funky Bunch). There they were a few meters away in the flesh. There was an unidentified actress sunning herself by a heater but we couldn't figure out who she was at the time. (After a little internet research, I found out it was Charlize Theron....wish someone had told me that at the time....) Donald actually came over for some quality PR time and posed for photos with people, including yours truly. Marky Mark never bothered to visit the crowd and I suspect it was cuz he was embarrased that he couldn't speak Italian. Georgina and I at one point attempted to casually hang out right in the camera's line of sight, near where all the choreographed extras were walking. Eventually some Italian film-set security thugs asked us if we were supposed to be there and then shuffled us along. Hopefully we'll be in a frame here and there. While standing around ogling the film set, we were approached by (small world of worlds) Caitlin and Clayton from camp who I had run into in Madrid a few weeks earlier.
That night, we accosted many different locals for a cheap, quality eatery for dinner. First we asked a bartender at an Irish Pub where we had a drink. He sent us to Margherita Square. They didn't have what we were looking for so we asked a bunch of students from the university. They led us to a "quiet, non-touristy" area behind the train station. There, we ran into a woman who recommended a lovely restaurant across town where she had apparently had her wedding reception years ago. We finally found it, "Paradiso Perduto" and ate the most incredible pasta meals covered in seafood sauces the likes of which I've never seen. Georgina had tomato sauce with all sorts of shellfish and I had black squid ink pasta which appealed more to the palette than you would think at first glance.
