On Friday the 13th, we flew (yet again with CrappyJet) to London where we met Georgina's friend Sarah from home. She took us to her place where she kindly let us crash for the night. That first night we ate dinner at a dodgy Chinese restaurant near Picadilly circus (in Chinatown). Prices were quite painful just getting to and from the airport and then when trying to eat. God save the Queen and her bloody British Pound. The next morning I had arranged to meet Chris (who had slept at the airport that night due to crappy shuttle service) outside Buckingham Palace. We met the scruffy traveller (pack and all) outside the Palace as planned (side note: I'm pretty darn scruffy myself having hair almost down to my arse already). We then found him a hostel for the night and went to see a Les Miserables matinee. It was a fantastic production in a charming old theater. That afternoon we also visited Big Ben and Westminster Abbey. At night we all ate at an all-you-can-eat pizza and salad bar place downtown. Georgina and I then made our way by bus to Stansted Airport where we would spend the night since there was no way to get to the airport early enough for our flight the next morning. To our surprise there were people strewn all over the airport in sleeping bags and on tables and under signs asleep. No flights left until 6:00 AM and yet the airport was full of sleepyheads. We snuggled on the floor in a corner of the entrance to the security area where Chris and I had actually passed to fly to Sweden three months earler. Deja-vu, except for the snuggling. Our flight finally left at around 7:30 the next morning (shockingly on time) and we arrived in Venice a couple hours later. There was some serious deja-vu there too, except this time it was much colder.
